Why are specialisedBy and transitiveDown important

It is very common in knowledge representation systems to confuse part-whole relations with the kind-of (or subsumption) relation. For any given application, it is usually possible to work around this limitation and to deliberately conflate part-whole and kind-of. However, as soon as you try to re-use the model, the work-arounds for one application get in the way of the next.

In later tutorials, many different applications of the transitiveDown and specialisedBy declarations will be described. The combination allows GRAIL models to be much simpler and more general than models in languages which lack these features.
